Hey, I’m Mari from Kutaisi, and I work at Rotel, the coziest spot in the city. If you’re staying with us, I might be around to say hi! I want to share one of my favorite day trips from Kutaisi to Martvili. It’s a meaningful place for me since my village is there. But, above all, it’s the nature that makes this trip so special!


If you're looking for a thrilling and nature-filled escape, a day trip to Samegrelo, Martvili is an absolute must. Just a one-hour drive away, this region offers an unforgettable experience filled with wild landscapes, exhilarating activities, and delicious food.


Nature at its Best: Martvili Canyon, Waterfalls, and Rivers

Start your road trip from Kutaisi with Matvili canyons. Martvili is famous for its beautiful canyons, rivers, and waterfalls. The Martvili Canyon is one of the most captivating sights in Georgia, with its deep, rocky walls and the turquoise waters of the river flowing through it. Here, you can hop on a boat and cruise along the river, taking in the majestic cliffs and the cool, fresh air of the surrounding forest. Near the canyon, don't miss the Abhesi Waterfall, a stunning cascade.

If you're in the mood for a bit of adrenaline, you'll find plenty of it in Martvili. Take a Zip line ride high above the Martvili canyon. For those looking to cool off and add a little thrill to the day, there are opportunities to jump into the river from nearby cliffs Abasha Riverside (just follow the trail from the main road)– a fun and refreshing way to swim and experience the stunning natural surroundings.


*Quick tip! Before diving into adventure, stop by Martvili Monastery, a historic site with breathtaking views. It’s a quick but rewarding stop!

Taste the Megrelian Cuisine and Georgian Food at Odo’s Maran

After an exciting day of exploring the wild landscapes, it's time to treat your taste buds to some authentic Megrelian cuisine. Head to Odo’s Marani, a local restaurant known for its delicious, traditional dishes. From mouthwatering Elarji, to unique local dishes made with fresh ingredients, you'll experience the true flavors of Samegrelo.

Extended Road Trip from Kutaisi: Nokalakevi’s Hidden Gems

If you start early and have time left, you can loop back on a different route and explore some great spots in Nokalakevi. First, stop by the Olympic Pool (free parking available—cross the suspension bridge and follow the path), where you can swim in the Tekhuri River and enjoy jumping into the water while watching local kids leap from high cliffs. Then, just beside, you’ll find the super hot Sulfur Springs, known for their therapeutic waters. Finally, explore the Nokalakevi Archaeological Museum and discover the old fortress remains, offering a glimpse into Georgia's history. Don’t forget to check out the tunnel at the end of the site.
