Discover Kutaisi’s Best Local Restaurants: Hidden Gems of Authentic Georgian Cuisine

Writer: Otar LejavaOtar Lejava

Hey, I’m Oto, the owner of Rotel, Kutaisi’s coziest stay. I’ve spent years exploring the city’s food scene, and I’m excited to share some of the best restaurants—the true local spots where history, tradition, and unbeatable flavors come together. If you're looking for an authentic Kutaisi dining experience, these are the places you don’t want to miss!

In the heart of Kutaisi, beyond the tourist hotspots and modern cafés, there are restaurants that have stood the test of time - humble eateries with decades of history, where generations of locals have gathered for hearty meals. These places may lack stylish decor, but they offer something far more valuable: authentic Georgian flavors at prices everyone can afford. This blog is dedicated to these hidden gems - where simplicity meets tradition, and where the best meals don’t need a fancy setting to be unforgettable.

Bikentia: Kutaisi’s Most Iconic Food Spot

Bikentia is a small yet legendary food spot in Kutaisi, where tradition meets unbeatable flavor. Opened in 1954 by its namesake owner, this no-seat eatery has built a reputation for serving just one thing: the famous “Bikentia” kebab set - perfectly grilled kebab, fresh bread, juicy tomato sauce, and a cold beer. With no chairs or fancy decor, it’s all about grabbing your meal and enjoying the authentic street-food experience. As the cheapest and most popular food stop in the city for both locals and tourists, Bikentia is a must-visit.

Don’t miss your chance to taste history!

Salobie Sapichkhia - Vegan Heaven

Nestled underground in Kutaisi’s historic Sapichkhia district, this family-run Salobie(eatery specializing in bean dishes) has been serving authentic Georgian flavors for over two decades. Designed in the style of a traditional Georgian tavern, the cozy space features low wooden tables and benches, creating a warm, rustic village atmosphere.

The menu highlights a variety of lobio (bean dishes), paired with Georgian favorites like mchadi (cornbread), fresh herbs, cheese, and aromatic spices. For the full experience, don’t miss ordering lobio with Imeretian adjika—a flavorful spicy paste that perfectly complements the dish.

Not just for vegetarians, the menu also offers a must-try grilled mackerel, a simple yet delicious choice for seafood lovers.

Dining room Nikhrikia - Best Canteen for Meat Lovers

Nikhrikia is one of Kutaisi’s most beloved and historic dining spots, named after its owner and known for its simple yet legendary menu. A true classic beer joint, it serves incredible meat dishes, including the iconic bivshtek (beef steak with egg), nutty chicken kharcho, and fresh green salad. Though located outside the city center, this hidden gem is a must-visit for an unforgettable taste of Kutaisi’s culinary heritage.

Zaurikas Dukani - One and Only Beef Stew

When it comes to Georgians’ favorite hangover dish, Ostri(beef stew) is at the top of the list. This rich, spicy stew with tender, juicy beef is best enjoyed with fresh Shoti bread, soaking up all the delicious flavors. Located 10 km from the city center, this spot is well worth the trip, offering warm hospitality and home-cooked dishes that feel just like a meal at grandma’s table.

Every restaurant I wrote about stirred my appetite and drew me back to the table. It’s worth highlighting that each spot on this list is a family-owned business, many of which carry the name of their founder - a sign that every visit comes with a commitment to quality, tradition, and a reputation served in every bowl. Wishing you a delicious journey!
